The Latest from Karl Lawrence Cellars

Tuesday, February 21, 2006
Just when I opened my big fat mouth about our eighty degree temps--Mother Nature comes along and hits me up the back side. It snowed everywhere here, even with some falling on St. Helena itself. I took this picture at 1:30 PM on Friday, the 17th, at Karl Lawrence customers' Chuck and Shirley Adams place on top of Howell Mountain. They live within three miles of Henry Brothers Ranch, to this picture's left, and within three miles of Michael's and Elizabeth's house to this picture's right. Chuck and Shirley's son, John, has the yellow stripe across his jacket. He's noted for being the first St. Helena High School basket ball player, in over twenty years, to score a thousand points. He now plays with my son, Nicholas, standing directly to John's right, on the basket ball recreational league. Rudy Berhens, of Berhens and Hitchcock, is at the far left in the brown coat.

Meanwhile--Michael's safely esconsed in the cellar, while sharing his tasting expertise with Kevin Law and Tom Genn.

Spring has sprung and that means that the '03 Release Offering letter will be in the mail soon. Actually, I'm not sure if we're still at the tail end of Indian summer or if spring really has sprung. After a week of blue skies, eighty degree temps, and no end to this, or rain, in sight, the blossoming trees think it really is spring. So thanks to all of you on the wait list who have returned their letters confirming that you want to be on the mailing list. We'll get this noted on your file. Also, we'll try to include people who sign up over the next week or so in this year's mailing. We will have to make a cut-off soon, so we can get the Offering letter out.

As many of you know, we work with Margaret Friedrich every year to support the St. Helena Soroptimist Crab-feed Charity Auction. This year we donated a pair of '97 and a pair of '99 Etched and Painted Reserves (pictured above). Only ten pairs of each of these were produced. The live auction lot aslo included a men's and lady's tropical shirt with the Karl Lawrence bottle label on the back panel, and a limo ride to and from an event of their choosing in my 1936 Buick Roadmaster. And as per usual; at least most of the time; Bob and Stacey Bressler won the auction lot. They had also won our lot the previous week at the school district's fundraiser. So I guess I'll just have to park my Buick in their driveway.

And as promised, here's our annual picture of Kester Smith displaying his Karl Lawrence tropical shirt while on the Blues Cruise. Cheryl's assisting his efforts.

Karl Lawrence donated a 2003 3 litre bottle, two splits, and a men's and ladies tropical shirt to the charity auction held on board. Auction proceeds went to help blues musicians who were wiped out by hurricane Katrina.
