Harvest is in full swing. We had some worries for a while as our late summer weather was fairly mild and then early October was down-right cool. However, this past week of high eighties temps has done the trick. Grapes are ripening well and coming in.

Chili feed at Sequoia Grove

As always, we are thankful for the harvest crew. Crush time requires long hours and repetetive tasks. The crew generally arrives at first light and leaves when its dark. As has now become our annual thank you, we provided a chili feed for the crew. I made vegetarian chili, mild chili, and hot chili. The hot chili was the first to go, AND, they heaped tons of extra jalepenos on it. Seems as if I don't know what hot is.

Jasper Henry & Sophia Trujillo sort grapes

And, as authorities continue to be preoccupied with building the western version of the Berlin Wall, Michael contiunes to exploit what labor he can to fill in the gaps.
Speaking of Michael, starting Sunday, and for a week, he's going to be the guest winemaker on the Robert Squires web. I think that means that people email in questions that he answers. I guess its some kind of a test. Its high time we find out if Michael knows what he's talking about. I'm not sure of the link. So I guess, just Gooogle it.

I'm sorry to have to tell you that we don't have as many 2002 To Kalon Reserve mags as we thought. We only have 12 mags, instead of the 28 I thought I had. We have a thing of "he said, he said," going on here. I do have it in my notes that we had 28 paired mags. However, that doesn't do anything for the reality now that we only have 12. We'll try to distribute those on a seniority basis. However, some have already gone out. So please bear with us as we try to be as fair as possible in distributing these to you. Thank you for being patient with us.

Michael supervises sorting Gary Morisoli's grapes

It appears that the recent efforts to fight terrorism have reduced the crush work-force. Here you can see Zoey and Sofia helping Michael sort the green grapes from the purple ones and the raisin ones from the plump ones. Its a good thing they passed their color test and raisin identification test in the employment interview. This just goes to show you that Michael will go to any means to bring your favorite wine to you.

The orders for the Reserve wines are pouring in. Shipping will commence this next Tuesday, October 10. The reason it won't commence on Monday, the 9th is because good old progressive California is celebrating the day Christopher Columbus started the Eurpean invasion of the Americas.

Michael at the new sorting belt

As you can see, Michael got a new toy. To really work it well, we need about ten people to sort out and discard the worst grapes. So you all are welcome to join us. Michael thinks we may have the Dr. Crane in by late next week. Then the week after, we should start having the other vineyards come in. So if any of you are interested, please contact Michael or myself. We'll try to have some fun, maybe some food, and of course, it takes a lot of beer to make good wine.
