For the third time, Karl Lawrence Cellars introduces two Vineyard Designated Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines.

Since our first vintage, in 1991, Karl Lawrence Cabernets have been the unique blending of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from Gary Morisoli Vineyard in Rutherford with the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from the Herb Lamb Vineyard at the base of Howell Mountain . The exceptional 2001 growing season and harvest produced fruit of superior quality and intensity enabling us to express, individually, each of these two vineyards.

Our winemaker, Michael Trujillo, selected a very small portion of each vineyard to be directed to this Reserve bottling, without jeopardizing the quality of the main blend. These two Vineyard Designated Cabernets are an expression of origin for our well known Karl Lawrence Cabernet Sauvignon blend. We remain committed to offering these Reserve wines only in exceptional vintages and only without compromise.

Vineyard Reserves

The Gary Morisoli Vineyard is located in the very heart of Napa Valley 's Rutherford Appellation, planted in the deep rich soils on the western Napa Valley floor, due west of the small town of Rutherford.  The soil type is gravelly loam with some bale clay loam that is deep and well drained. The vineyard is planted on two different rootstocks with Clones 7 and 8. Grape flavor and maturity are futher benefited with the low per acre yields. Michael has crafted many wines from the Gary Morisoli Vineyards since the early 1980's. In 1991, Gary Morisoli signed Karl Lawrence cellars to their own independent vineyard block.

Herb Lamb Vineyard

The Herb Lamb Vineyard is located on Napa Valley 's eastern rim, just below the boundary defining the Howell Mountain Appellation. This small 4.5 acre hillside vineyard has definitely established itself in growing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon. The soil type is boomer series with a lot of rock and is well drained. The vineyard is planted on a variety of root-stocks with Clone 7. Soils, location, and a very low per acre yield produce this intense and spicy Cabernet Sauvignon. Michael has worked with the fruit from this vineyard since its very first harvest in 1990. The grapes became part of the Karl Lawrence Cabernet Sauvignon with our first vintage in 1991.

Karl Lawrence Cellars strives to bring to our people the best that the Napa Valley has to offer. Since our beginning, Michael has experimented with numerous vineyards and has finally found a vineyard worthy of inclusion in the Karl Lawrence portfolio. With the exceptional 2002 vintage, the Single Vineyard Reserve wine, Beckstoffer's To Kalon Vineyard, will be introduced next Fall in limited allotments. We trust that you will also find this wine to be a superior quality and value.

Limited Production

The 2001 Vineyard Reserve production consists of 912 pairs of 750 ml. labeled bottles, and 50 pairs of 1.5 liter etched and painted bottles for each of the two vineyards. Orders of one or two pairs, will be shipped in the customary styrofoam shipping containers. Orders of three pairs will be shipped in a specially made, six-pack, pine box. This limited production will be sold primarily through our mailer, with a small amount directed to restaurants and retailers. We appreciate your patience with us as we work to distribute this small production in as fair a manner as possible.
